John Cena rode into the sunset on December 13. ‘The Never Up’ attitude of Cena was brought down to the mere concept of ‘Letting Go’ by him. Gunther made him tap out, ending his career in heartbreak. However, a young talent hoped to be the one to retire The Greatest of All Time.
Speaking on No-Contest Wrestling, Oba Femi shared his feelings about John Cena. He felt a little dismay at not having faced the 17-time world champion in his career. Femi felt optimistic when fans discussed the idea of him being Cena’s last opponent, but it did not come to fruition in the end.
Thanks for the submission!
“I really wanted to work with John. I was really hoping and praying, ‘Don’t go, don’t go too fast.’ But he did. I was really hoping to work with him, especially when a lot of people were putting fire under the idea of me being the one to retire him and stuff like that. I was really hoping that would happen, but it didn’t,” said Oba Femi. [H/T WrestleTalk]
The Ruler pointed out how symbolic it was to have his first main roster match on the exact day Cena ended his career. It almost felt like a new version of the same guy had arrived. He definitely feels the privilege of being among the small number of people who got to wrestle at that iconic Saturday Night’s Main Event.
Oba Femi reveals what John Cena did after the retirement match
Femi revealed that after the show ended, John Cena came back to the locker room. He took photos with the young talent and all the stars who were there, and he shared a toast.
Oba said he felt fortunate to have been part of it. It really showed how humble John was. Even as a wrestling legend and a mainstream Hollywood personality, he kept his respect for all things in WWE.
“After the show, John came back to the locker room – big star, big shot John Cena – he came back to the locker room with all the boys, and he shared one last toast and took shots with us, and I’m glad that I got to be a part of that. It really showed how humble he was, no matter how big he got in WWE or in Hollywood, he was, at his core, still just one of the boys. So respect to John.” [H/T WrestleTalk]
The former NXT Champion also stated that he had been advised by The Greatest of All Time. John always had some good things to say about him and corrected him wherever necessary. Oba feels content that he at least had some sort of relationship with Cena.
