The third match of T20 World Cup 2026 is officially in the history books. Defending champions India defeated USA to open their account in the points table. The Indian team collapsed to 77/6 after being asked to bat first at the Wankhede Stadium. Suryakumar Yadav held one end till the end and ensured India crossed the 160-run mark. Yadav blasted 10 fours and four sixes in his unbeaten 49-ball 84. Shadley van Schalkwyk emerged as the pick of the bowlers for USA with figures of 4/25 in four overs.
Even the USA top-order collapsed at the Wankhede Stadium. Thirties from Milind Kumar, Sanjay Krishnamurthy and Shubham Ranjane kept USA in the hunt, but the Indian bowlers eventually restricted them to 132/8 in 20 overs.
Mohammed Siraj stole the show with figures of 3/29 in four overs. Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel bagged two wickets each. Varun Chakravarthy bowled a decent spell of 1/24.

Suryakumar Yadav won the Player of the Match award in India’s opening match of the mega event. The Indian skipper played a magnificent knock of 84 runs to lift the team up from 77/6 to 161/9.
At the post-match presentation, Yadav mentioned that the experience of playing domestic cricket in Mumbai played a huge role in his success against USA. He knew the wicket was a 200+ surface, and so he played his shots accordingly to rescue the team.

This was only the second T20I match between India and USA in cricket history. The previous one happened in 2024 on USA’s soil. Incidentally, Suryakumar Yadav’s half-century helped India win that game as well.

- Yadav also broke Virat’s record for the highest individual score by an Indian in a T20 World Cup innings where no other Indian player crossed 30. Yadav scored 84, with the second-highest score being 25 of Tilak Varma. Previously, Virat scored 82* vs Australia in 2016, when the next top-scorer was Yuvraj Singh, with 21.
