Former pacer Varun Aaron believes Suryakumar Yadav being dropped on 15 proved to be the turning point of the 2026 T20 World Cup Group A match between India and USA. Aaron reckons that had the chance been taken, Team India would have ended up posting a much smaller total and USA too would have approached their chase in a very different manner.
India beat USA by 29 runs their opening match of the 2026 T20 World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday, February 7. Sent into bat, the hosts shockingly collapsed to 77-6 before skipper Suryakumar (84* off 49) played a blinder to lift the team to 161-9. In response, USA were held to 132-8.
There was massive moment in the game in the 10th over of India’s innings. Batting on 15, Suryakumar chipped a return catch, but Shubham Ranjane could not hold on to the chance. During a discussion on ESPNcricinfo, Aaron opined that the dropped catch went a long way in USA losing the game. He said:
“Dropping Surya at 15 was the biggest moment of the game for me. If they had Surya out early, we could have seen a very different score. They could have had a very different approach to their batting. They would have had a more measured approach rather than going hell for leather.”
Former India captain Anil Kumble also agreed that USA had a chance to pull off an upset in Mumbai on Saturday, but would rue the missed chance, which gave Suryakumar and India a huge reprieve. Kumble commented:
“USA had a great opportunity. They certainly had more than 50 percent chance to beat India today. USA will rue that. That was certainly the biggest moment of the match because India could have gone probably 120-130 from thereon. Most of the other batters struggles.”
Suryakumar struck 10 fours and four sixes in his belligerent knock. India’s bowlers backed their skipper as Mohammed Siraj claimed 3-29, while Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel picked up two wickets each.
“We could have batted a little better” – Suryakumar Yadav
Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, Indian captain Suryakumar admitted that the pitch was a slightly tricky one to bat on. However, he also agreed that the batters could have been a lot smarter. He said (as quoted by Cricbuzz):
“We could have batted a little better. I think after winning also, you get to learn a lot of things. And today we learned that we could have batted a little better or maybe a little smarter. Those small, small partnerships could have got us to 160 rather than one batter or two batter trying to play it till the end.”
Team India’s next group match in the 2026 T20 World Cup will be against Namibia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on February 12.
