Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo and reached 200 goal contributions for the club quicker than the 41-year-old. The goal against Tottenham saw him notch his 104th goal for the Red Devils in just 314 matches.
The midfielder joined from Sporting CP in 2020 and has been a key player for the Red Devils since. He was made captain by Erik ten Hag in 2023, after the manager stripped Harry Maguire of the armband.
Thanks for the submission!
Fernandes found the back of the net in the 81st minute today, February 7, at Old Trafford as Manchester United eased to a 2-0 win over Tottenham. The goal saw him become the second fastest player to reach 200 goal contributions for the Red Devils in the Premier League era.
The Portuguese midfielder reached the milestone in 314 matches, 25 fewer than Cristiano Ronaldo needed to score his 144 goals and 56 assists. The former Sporting CP star reached the milestone with his 104th league goal, while having 96 assists to his name.
Despite being in fine form, Fernandes failed to make the record his own, and Wayne Rooney continues to keep it. The Englishman scored 133 goals and got 67 assists in his first 295 matches.
Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo to team up at FIFA World Cup
Bruno Fernandes has insisted that Portugal need Cristiano Ronaldo as the national team captain continues to deliver on the big stage. He was asked by the media if Roberto Martinez’s side were better without the Al-Nassr captain starting, but he rebuffed the claims. He said:
“Cristiano inside the box continues to be a very high-level player. He draws defenders and creates space for other players. If Cristiano doesn’t play and [Paris Saint-Germain’s] Gonçalo [Ramos] does, Gonçalo is strong in pressing and good at diagonal runs.”
“When I’m not playing and Bernardo [Silva] is playing as a number 10, Bernardo gives you more possession, I make more of a final pass. It’s all like that. All players add things and take away others. Cristiano is the same as us. We have to know how to adapt and enhance each other’s qualities so that the national team benefits.”
Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo played a key role as Portugal sealed their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 41-year-old has confirmed that he will be playing at the tournament and it would be his final edition.
