India and the United States of America (USA) are set to face each other in their respective opening games of the T20 World Cup 2026. The contest will take place on Saturday, February 7, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
The Men in Blue will enter the tournament as the defending champions, having won the previous edition under Rohit Sharma. Additionally, they convincingly defeated New Zealand 4‑1 in the recent home T20I series and then beat South Africa in their sole warm-up game.
On the other hand, the USA lost both their warm-up fixtures, once against India A and once to New Zealand. In terms of head-to-head record, the two teams have met only once before, during the 2024 T20 World Cup at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, where India secured a seven-wicket win while chasing 111.
Even though recent form and records are not in favor of the USA, they have players capable of changing the course of the game. On that note, here is a look at three USA players who could trouble India in their Group A match of the T20 World Cup 2026.
#1 Saurabh Netravalkar
The first on the list is Saurabh Netravalkar, the USA’s leading wicket-taker in T20Is. The left-arm seamer has featured in 41 matches, claiming 40 wickets at an average of 22.92, a strike rate of 20.07, and an economy of 6.85.
The 34-year-old recently picked up a couple of wickets in the USA’s warm-up game against New Zealand and will be looking to draw confidence from his spell against India in the 2024 T20 World Cup, where he bowled four overs and returned figures of 2/18, dismissing Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
Netravalkar will aim to make the most of the new ball, using his accuracy and consistent line and length. His prior experience playing domestic cricket in Mumbai before moving to the USA could also prove valuable, making him a significant threat to India’s batters.
#2 Andries Gous
Next is wicket-keeper batter Andries Gous. The 32-year-old had a solid outing in the warm-up game against India A, scoring 44 off 31 balls, including five fours and two sixes. The right-handed batter has featured in 25 T20Is, accumulating 751 runs at an average of 32.65 and a strike rate of 145.26, with six fifties and a highest score of 81.
Gous brings a wealth of experience in T20 cricket, having played in various franchise leagues including the ILT20, CPL, and MLC, scoring 2,960 runs in 111 innings with 20 fifties and two hundreds. Additionally, he recently represented Desert Vipers in the ILT20 2025-26, scoring 228 runs in six innings at an average of 57.00 and a strike rate of 174.04, including one fifty and one hundred, showcasing the significant impact he can have in a match.
#3 Saiteja Mukkamalla
Another player who could trouble India is Saiteja Mukkamalla. In the USA’s warm-up game against New Zealand, he showcased a glimpse of his talent, scoring 50 off 31 balls, including four fours and two sixes. The 21-year-old has impressively made his mark in his short T20I career so far.
The opening batter has featured in 18 T20Is, amassing 639 runs at an average of 42.60 and a strike rate of 152.87, with five fifties and one hundred. His highest score came against Oman, an unbeaten 100 off 48 balls. Mukkamalla plays at a high tempo and combines a strong strike rate with a decent average, making him capable of turning the game around with his batting.
