Real Madrid chief Florentino Perez plotting Luis Figo-esqe move for Barcelona superstar in 2027: Reports

Real Madrid chief Florentino Perez is reportedly planning a major move for Barcelona superstar Pedri in 2027. A potential move would emulate Luis Figo’s move from the Catalans to Los Blancos back in 2000.

Since the departure of midfield gems Luka Modric and Toni Kroos, Real Madrid have been struggling to bring creativity to their midfield. Los Blancos have been looking to reinforce their midfield with new signings in the future. Pedri, often considered among the best midfielders in the world today, is the strength of the Blaugrana midfield. The Spaniard is best known for his ball control and passing ability, leading to comparisons with legends like Xavi and Andres Iniesta.

According to journalist Siro Lopez (h/t Madrid Universal), Real Madrid president Florentino Perez sees Pedri as a dream signing. He is reportedly aiming to make a move for the Barcelona midfielder in the summer of 2027. If the move is successful, it will be history repeating itself from 2000, when the legendary Luis Figo crossed over to join Los Blancos from Barca.

Figo’s infamous move to the Bernabeu marked the beginning of the Galacticos era in Real Madrid, and remains one of the most discussed transfers in contemporary football. However, a potential move for Pedri will be difficult, if not impossible. The Spaniard has shown no signs of wanting to leave Barcelona, with his current contract running until 2030.

Pedri also has a whopping €1 billion release clause, and La Blaugrana would not let him leave for a small fee, especially since he is an integral part of the midfield. As such, it reportedly remains a dream for Florentino Perez, but the operation remains unlikely.

In a 2022 interview with Cadena COPE, Barcelona superstar Pedri opened up on how he was rejected by Real Madrid after trials. He said (via Sports Illustrated):

“I went to Valdebebas and I couldn’t train the first few days because there was snow on the pitches. I trained for three days. I think they were playing one day and they sent me down to train with the B team and, in the end, they told me that I wasn’t good enough to be there and that they were going to keep scouting me.”

He added:

“Now I’m where I want to be. At first, you don’t like being rejected anywhere, but then it motivates you to think that if they didn’t want you, you’ll work now so that something else can come your way in the future. I don’t remember who rejected me, [but] if I saw them, I’d tell them I’m enjoying myself at Barcelona right now.”

Pedri has made 227 appearances for Barca so far, recording 28 goals and 29 assists across competitions. He is currently out due to injury, but is expected to return soon. The Spaniard is an integral part of Hansi Flick’s plans and remains a significant part of the Blaugrana midfield owing to his creativity.
