After Michael O’Neill’s arrival, Blackburn Rovers are facing the prospect of losing one of their most promising players to the Premier League.
O’Neill “grateful” for Blackburn opportunity
With time running out to save their season, Blackburn made the decision to sack Valerien Ismael and have now turned to Northern Ireland manager O’Neill to split his duties and keep them in the Championship.
It’s a controversial appointment, given how desperate Rovers’ position is and O’Neill’s double responsibility in two different jobs, but the veteran manager has signed on the dotted line, nonetheless.
After agreeing a short-term arrangement, O’Neill told the club website: “I am grateful to the Irish FA for their support and cooperation in allowing me to take this opportunity.
“Blackburn Rovers is a historic Premier League-winning club with a proud tradition, and the chance to work at a club of that stature is one I felt was important to embrace.
“The immediate focus is clear – there is a challenge ahead in the final stretch of the season and the objective is to help the team build momentum and climb the Championship table.
“From a professional perspective, being back on the training pitch every day, involved in matches and the rhythm of club football, is always valuable. It keeps you sharp and connected to the demands of the game at this level.
“For now, my focus is on giving everything to Blackburn Rovers in the weeks ahead. I understand what this club means to its supporters and I am looking forward to working with the players and staff to deliver performances the fans can be proud of.”

The 56-year-old must waste no time before turning things around on and off the pitch, and he may yet have the chance to convince one player to stay put.
As reported by TeamTalk, Arsenal and Manchester United have made contact to sign Igor Tyjon from Blackburn this summer as his current contract continues to tick down.
As things stand, the teenager is set to leave as a free agent this summer in a major blow for those in Lancashire. Tyjon is considered one of the most promising players in the Championship and extensive interest from the Premier League should, therefore, come as no surprise.
It’s an insant blow for O’Neill, who could do without the transfer noise at the beginning of a crucial, short-term tenure. Meanwhile, in the long-term, there’s no doubt that Blackburn would be losing an excellent talent who has received impressive praise at Ewood Park.
“He had a fantastic pre-season. He’s just played for England in the week. I was delighted to give him his debut today.
“He has worked, very, very hard. He’s a 16-year-old boy and we have to remember that. He is certainly one for the future.” (Ex-manager John Eustace)
At 17 years old, the forward seemingly has the world at his feet and could be one to watch if he seals a move away from Blackburn this summer.
