A £65k-a-week Wolverhampton Wanderers star is now edging closer to a post-window exit, having held direct talks with a club president.
Post-window exit on the cards as Wolves prepare for relegation
Although it is still mathematically possible for Wolves to avoid relegation from the Premier League, the die is essentially cast, as they sit 18 points from safety with just 14 games left to play, having only won one match throughout the entire season.
Despite it being near-certain the Old Gold will be a Championship team in 2026-27, they did manage to make two new signings at the end of the January transfer window, with Angel Gomes joining on loan from Marseille, while Adam Armstrong was brought in from Southampton on a permanent basis.
Having amassed 91 goals and 37 assists in 277 second tier games, Armstrong could be the ideal man to lead the line for Rob Edwards‘ side next season, whereas the signings from the previous summer transfer window clearly haven’t done the business.
Jhon Arias was one of the players brought in to provide an attacking threat, but the winger has failed to get to grips with life in the Premier League, netting just one goal in 23 appearances, which came in the 3-0 victory against West Ham United in January.
According to a report from The Express & Star, Arias’ time at Molineux could now be coming to an end, with Brazilian side Palmeiras pushing to secure a deal for the forward, who has lost his place in the starting XI in recent weeks.
Wolves are open to letting the 28-year-old leave, and reports from elsewhere have revealed he has now held direct talks with Palmeiras president Leila Pereira.
Brazilian journalist Paulo Vinicius Coelho adds: “One important detail is that if – or when – Wolverhampton gets relegated, Arias loses 50% of his salary. According to his contract, going to the second division cuts his salary in half.”
Wolves should definitely cash-in on Arias
The signing of the Colombian made sense to a certain extent, given that he impressed throughout his time at Fluminense, contributing 47 goals and 55 assists in 230 appearances for the Brazilian club.
However, it was always going to be a gamble to sign a player with no experience in Europe, and the former Fluminense man has been unable to deliver in England, netting just two goals in all competitions, and often only being used as a substitute.
As such, it would make sense to cash-in on the £65k-a-week forward, and interestingly, Wolves could be in line to receive a large fee, with the aforementioned report stating Palmeiras have made an offer amounting to £21.5m.
That would be a useful amount of money to reinvest during the summer transfer window, at which point Edwards will almost certainly be trying to bring in players capable of leading his side back to the Premier League at the first attempt.
