Deion Sanders makes his stance crystal clear on taking NFL head coaching job

NFL legend Deion Sanders was mentioned as a potential head coach candidate during the frenetic 2025 coaching carousel. As his son Shedeur Sanders prepared for the NFL draft, the two-time Super Bowl champion was linked with the Las Vegas Raiders and especially the Dallas Cowboys. Brian Schottenheimer ultimately landed the job following Mike McCarthy’s firing.

During an appearance on Thursday’s edition of ESPN’s “First Take,” host Shae Cornette asked “Primetime” if he would considering going from college football to the NFL.

“Not whatsoever. What transpired with my son last year? Ain’t no way in the world (would I return to the NFL). No, I don’t have a…” Sanders said before making a brief pause.

He tried to end the conversation, but made everybody in the panel laugh.

“Thank you, Lord,” Sanders said. “When I stop like that, that don’t mean I’m lost for words … that means God said, ‘You a head coach now, you can’t do that. You can’t talk like that, you can’t say that. I know you’re comfortable with your brothers here, but you can’t say that.’”

Shedeur Sanders was subject to heavy criticism during his rookie season. He suffered one of the most dramatic draft slips, going from being projected as a first-round pick to getting selected in the fifth round by the Cleveland Browns.

He started the season as the team’s third-string quarterback. He finished the season as the starter, winning a couple of games in the process.

Deion Sanders went off on Bill Belichick’s HOF snub

Deion Sanders, as many others around the NFL, was upset after Bill Belichick was snubbed from the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. Sanders called out the committee and voting panel on social media.

“The Disrespect to Coach Belichick is straight out IGNORANT! He’s arguably the BEST NFL COACH TO EVER COACH THE GAME! How quickly we forget the impact Coach Belichick made on all of us! @nfl WOW!” Sanders tweeted on Tuesday.

Sanders was inducted into the Hall in August 2011. Belichick will have a second chance next year, but the damage is done.
