Arsenal have now made contact over a deal for an “insane” midfielder, who has been in red-hot form.
Gunners stepping up pursuit of new midfielder
The Gunners are keen on bringing in a new central midfielder at the end of the campaign, and Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali is among the more ambitious targets, with Mikel Arteta known to be an admirer of the Italy international.
However, it remains to be seen whether the Magpies will be prepared to strengthen a Premier League rival by cashing-in on Tonali, and there could be competition for his signature, as the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City are also keen.
Should Arteta’s side go on to win the Premier League title, the Emirates Stadium will no doubt be an attractive destination this summer, and they remain in a strong position to do exactly that, sitting six points clear of Pep Guardiola’s side after the weekend’s action.
However, with the race for Tonali heating up, the north Londoners have now set their sights on more of an unknown quantity ahead of the summer, according to a report from TEAMtalk, which states they are now stepping up their interest in FC Nordsjaelland midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi.
In fact, Arsenal made contact over a deal for the maestro, but it appears as though they may have to fend off rival interest, with the likes of Chelsea, Nottingham Forest, Brighton & Hove Albion and Manchester United also being named as potential suitors.
The Superliga side are looking to receive at least £22m for Yirenkyi, who has been in red-hot form as of late, and the Gunners were in attendance to watch him deliver a Man of the Match performance in a 2-1 win against Sonderjyske at the weekend.
“Insane” Yirenkyi could be exciting long-term signing
The eight-time Ghana international put in a top all-round display against Sonderjyske, contributing a goal and an assist, while also making two clearances, one interception and one tackle to help lead his side to a narrow victory.
Arsenal enter race to sign £65m Premier League star who’s a “creator of chaos”
The Gunners have set their sights on a new forward.
It has been a solid campaign in general for the starlet, who has two goals and five assists to his name in 18 Superliga appearances, which indicates he may soon be ready to test himself in a better league.
With the central midfielder yet to prove himself outside Denmark, he could be some way off being a regular starter for a club the size of Arsenal, but he is certainly exhibiting encouraging signs.
That said, Arsenal are well-stocked in central midfield, with Declan Rice amassing four goals and five assists in the Premier League this season, while Martin Zubimendi has been described as “world-class” by Spanish football writer Alexandra Jonson.
As such, even though Yirenkyi could be a savvy long-term addition to Arteta’s squad, the squad depth could hinder his development, as has arguably been the case with fellow youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly.
