Messi training alone as Argentina star in race against time to make World Cup

Lionel Messi trained separately from the main Argentina squad during their first session in the United States as he continues his recovery from a hamstring issue.

The Inter Miami captain has not played since May 24 after suffering muscle fatigue in his left hamstring, although Argentina remain confident he will be fit for their opening World Cup fixture against Algeria on June 16.

Messi, now 38, joined up with Lionel Scaloni’s squad at their training base in Kansas City and completed an individual programme during Monday’s session.

Several Argentina players also training separately

Messi was not the only player working away from the main group, with Emiliano Martinez, Nico Paz, Leandro Paredes, Nico Gonzalez, Thiago Almada, Gonzalo Montiel and Nahuel Molina also following individual fitness plans.

The Argentine Football Association confirmed the players are making progress under the supervision of the medical staff.

A statement said: “The players who are suffering from niggles and injuries continue to work with the physiotherapy team on specific exercises on the pitch and are making good progress.”

Romero and Alvarez handed fitness boost

There was positive news for Scaloni ahead of Saturday’s friendly against Honduras, with Cristian Romero and Julian Alvarez both returning to full training.

Romero has recovered from a ligament sprain in his right knee, while Alvarez is back after missing more than a month with an ankle injury sustained in early May.

The pair took part in Monday’s session after receiving medical clearance.

Argentina’s World Cup preparations continue

Argentina face Honduras in a warm-up match on Saturday before concluding their preparations against Iceland in Auburn, Alabama, on June 9.

The reigning world champions begin their title defence against Algeria in Kansas City on June 16.

Scaloni’s side will then take on Austria in Arlington, Texas, on June 22 before completing their group-stage campaign against Jordan on June 27.
