Eight clubs booked their places in the Europa League last 16 aftet the second legs of the knockout play-off ties on Thursday night.
Premier League strugglers Nottingham Forest were among those sides, progressing 4-2 on aggregate against Fenerbahce despite a 2-1 defeat at the City Ground, with Callum Hudson-Odoi scoring the all-important goal to kill off a comeback.
It was the end of the road for Celtic in Europe this season however as they crashed out 4-2 on aggregate to Suttgartt despite a 1-0 win in Germany courtesy of Luke McCowan’s goal in the first minute.
The biggest drama of the night came in Belgium as Dinamo Zagreb won 3-1 in normal time to take their tie against Genk to 4-4 and head for extra-time, before goals from Yunya Ito and Daan Heymans eventually sealed the victory for the hosts.
In one of the earlier games, Lille completed a second-leg comeback against Crvena zvezda, with Olivier Giroud levelling the tie in the first half before Nathan Nguy bagged the winner nine minutes into extra-time.
Penalties were needed for Panathinaikos to overcome Viktoria Plzen after a 1-1 draw in Czechia which made it 3-3 across the two legs, with the Greek side eventually winning 4-3 in the shootout.
Celta Vigo or Lille will face Premier League high-fliers Aston Villa in the last 16, with the Spanish club ensuring progression in their tie with a 1-0 win over PAOK thanks to Williot Swetberg’s goal, securing a 3-1 aggregate win.
There were no issues for Bologna at home either as they claimed a 1-0 win over Brann, backing up their win by the same scoreline in the first leg.
The draw for the last 16 will take place on Friday, with Villa, Roma, Porto and Lyon among the clubs lying in wait as we reach the knockout round proper.
