Despite already signing Jeremy Jacquet, Liverpool are set to launch a £26m offer to welcome a second Ligue 1 defender this summer.
Slot provides update on “serious” Endo injury
It was almost the perfect evening for Liverpool in Wearside, as they closed the gap on their top four rivals and ended Sunderland’s home unbeaten run in the Premier League.
In many ways, it was exactly the response that the Reds needed to produce after such a disastrous late collapse against Manchester City last weekend. Their performance against Sunderland was controlled and professional – two things they’ve not been on enough occasions this season.
It was a night without yet more injury woes for Liverpool, however, as the curse of the right-back spot struck once more. This time, it was Wataru Endo who suffered what Arne Slot described as a “serious” injury, forcing Joe Gomez to return from the bench ahead of schedule.
His injury leaves the Reds without one of their makeshift options whilst Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong remain sidelined.
Joe Cole wowed by “breathtaking” Liverpool star who was everywhere vs Sunderland
The Reds returned to winning ways.
Sharing an update on the Japan international, Slot told reporters: “It is a serious one. How serious we don’t know yet because then of course he has to be assessed tomorrow, but it doesn’t look good.
“It’s his foot, but if it’s his ankle or his foot that is what we have to assess tomorrow, but I assume that he will be out for a long time. What is long, that is difficult to say this moment.”
It’s a timely reminder about Liverpool’s defensive depth, or the lack of it, and it is something that they simply have to address in the summer transfer window.
Liverpool preparing £26m offer to sign Cresswell
To that end, the Premier League champions have already agreed a deal worth £60m to sign Jacquet from Stade Rennais ahead of the summer window. The Frenchman chose Anfield over Chelsea, and will significantly ease Slot’s centre-back concerns.
But the Reds aren’t done there. According to Sports Boom, Liverpool are preparing an offer to sign Charlie Cresswell from Toulouse worth around €30m (£26m) this summer.
The former Leeds United defender has enjoyed an impressive rise in France and is now firmly on the radar of several Premier League clubs, including Liverpool, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur.
As talent scout Jacek Kulig pointed out last summer, Cresswell enjoyed an “excellent” Euro U21 tournament with England and it should come as little surprise that a number of Premier League sides are eyeing his signature.
At 23 years old, he would be the perfect addition to go alongside Jacquet as Liverpool aim to rebuild their backline this summer.
