Crystal Palace have now made contact over a deal for a “very impressive” midfielder, amid the uncertainty surrounding Adam Wharton’s future at Selhurst Park.
Palace make approach to sign new midfielder
Palace brought their 12-game winless run to an end on Sunday, securing a 1-0 victory away at rivals Brighton & Hove Albion, and Wharton put in a solid performance, winning four of the five ground duels he contested to help keep the hosts at bay.
However, the Englishman’s future at Selhurst Park is up in the air, with it recently emerging that Manchester United have opened talks, while there is also interest from the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.
With the 22-year-old under contract until 2029, the Eagles remain in a strong negotiating position for the time being, but with a number of the Premier League‘s top clubs keen, they may have a battle on their hands trying to retain his services.
As such, it would make sense to get a new midfielder through the door, and Oliver Glasner‘s side have now set their sights on a new target.
That is according to a report from TEAMtalk, which states Crystal Palace have now made contact over a deal for FC Nordsjaelland midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi, who is starting to attract interest from a number of the Premier League’s biggest clubs.
Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Nottingham Forest are also credited with an interest in the 20-year-old, given his fantastic recent form, and the Danish side are holding out for a fee of at least £22m.
With Palace currently conducting checks, there is clear interest on their behalf, and there are indications the central midfielder could be a viable long-term replacement for Wharton.
“Very impressive” Yirenkyi catching the eye in Denmark
Scout Ben Mattinson has likened the Nordsjaelland star to Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, while also praising him for his defensive abilities, saying: “Very impressive in recent games as he’s breaking through. Yirenkyi has impressive physical strength to ride challenges and win duels.
Crystal Palace “machine” is quickly becoming the new Zaha under Parish
Crystal Palace have work to do after Oliver Glasner’s well-crafted project at Selhurst Park has come unstuck.
“Defensively he screens the backline well, anticipates danger, powerful imposing presence, aggressive tackler.”
Not only that, but the young Ghanaian, who is represented by the same agent as Yeremy Pino, has also proven himself as a threat on the front foot since making his breakthrough at Nordsjaelland, contributing four goals and seven assists in 40 appearances.
With the youngster still yet to prove himself in one of Europe’s major leagues, it may be a while before he is ready to be a consistent starter for a club like Palace.
However, on a long-term basis, Yirenkyi could be an exciting addition to Glasner’s squad, and a £22m deal wouldn’t break the bank.
