To the Beginning is the 12th main quest in Nioh 3, which takes the protagonist back to the Edo period. It starts after completing the Ill Omen main quest, and the main objective, Light of Hope, is to stop Tokugawa Kunimatsu’s savagery. While he defeated you during the game’s first mission, this time, you have to eliminate the boss.

To the Beginning main quest in Nioh 3: Walkthrough
Light of Hope
When the mission starts, proceed south, exit through the door, and kill the yokai waves with Yagyu Munenori’s help.
Then, go near the glowing wall on the east and interact with the Traverse prompt to make a pathway. Continue north to find the first shrine in this region. From there, head east on the road until you reach the area where you need to eliminate more yokai waves.
While the first few enemies are easy to deal with, a boss fight against Gozuki will occur at the end. Utilize your Guardian Spirit and Soul Core abilities to defeat it. If approached patiently, the battle should be much easier since two allies will be helping as well.
Note: I recommend not using the Living Artifact ability here, as it will be more important during the next boss fight.
When the subsequent cutscene ends, you will be accompanied by two Guardian Spirits: Guhin and Nekomata. Meanwhile, ensure to loot the Soul Cores and rewards from the defeated enemies.
Next, use the Spirit Vein on the northern wall to go up, then drop down to find another nearby shrine. Continue north to find a Benevolent Grave (summon) that you can utilize for a helping hand.

Drop down the well in the northern corner to access the underground section. Lastly, open the door at the end of the road to start the boss fight against Tokugawa Kunimatsu.
Defeat Tokugawa Kunimatsu (To the Beginning main quest)
The boss is similar to what you faced during the game’s initial segment, but this time, you will be much stronger. With prominent weapons, armor, ninjutsu tools, Soul Corse, and, of course, the Guardian Spirits, you will now have plenty of tools to make the battle easier.
Still, Tokugawa Kunimatsu deals a ton of damage using a lot of projectiles and combos. Here are the attacks you have to be aware of:
- Red attacks and the swift combos.
- An electric strike that comes towards you in a straight line after a brief delay.
- His Guardian Spirit’s wind attacks (two types).
- Delayed lightning attacks from the ground. Get out of its range to avoid taking damage.
- Long-range sword attack.
Try to be agile, and use timely abilities to shred through his health bar. When Tokugawa Kunimatsu is defeated and knocked down, attack again to trigger the next cutscene.
With this, the To the Beginning main quest in Nioh 3 will come to an end, and you will be teleported to the Bakumatsu region. You can then pursue the title’s next main quest, A New Era.
