Key objective for every team

The 2026 F1 pre-season test in Bahrain kicks off the point where things start getting serious. The first ‘shakedown’ was executed behind closed doors, and even the media could not cover it as well.

This time around, we have the first official pre-season test, and even though we do not have coverage for the entire day, we will still have an hour of coverage where decent information will be shared with the fans.

The shakedown saw Williams as the key absentee, and Aston Martin also could only make a somewhat obligatory debut.

This time around, though, teams would be desperate to get on track and make up for lost time. All 11 F1 teams head to Bahrain with somewhat differing objectives. What are they? Let’s take a look.

McLaren

McLaren has made it clear that the package that the team introduced in Barcelona will debut in Melbourne as well. There’s also a clear admission that the area where the team struggles at the moment is the lack of understanding of the power unit.

There’s a knowledge deficit with which the reigning F1 champion is trying to contend, and that’s where the true gap lies compared to the works Mercedes.

Mercedes

Mercedes had arguably a peerless test in Barcelona, and Bahrain would be all about testing how the power unit works with the sustainable fuel.

It should be noted that none of the teams used 100% sustainable fuel in Barcelona, and that’s one area where the squad would be hoping to gain some understanding as well.

Red Bull

Coupled with the usage of sustainable fuel, Red Bull would be hoping to ramp up the mileage on its power units. The team had a decent debut in Barcelona, but the numbers just don’t match up with what the rivals were able to accomplish, and hence that’s one area where the squad would be hoping to make significant strides.

Ferrari

Just like Mercedes, Ferrari would be trialling the 100% sustainable fuel in Bahrain. This will also be the test where the SF-26 is pushed a little more compared to what the teams did in Barcelona.

Williams

Mileage is the key word for Williams. The team missed the first test in Barcelona, and hence the run in Bahrain is key for their 2026 F1 season.

The team has to focus on gaining as much understanding as it can about its package.

Racing Bulls

For Racing Bulls, the focus would be similar to what parent team Red Bull has, and try to stress-test the power unit as much as they can without going over the limit.

Aston Martin

For Aston Martin, the goal has to be to hit the track and start learning the package a bit more. Neither the Honda power unit nor the AMR26 has much mileage under their belts after the F1 shakedown in Barcelona; hence, Bahrain is pivotal.

Haas

Haas has talked about how learning more and more about power management is going to be the key in 2026, and the team would be working more and more on that front to optimise the understanding.

Audi

Just like Aston Martin and Williams, Audi comes to the F1 pre-season test light on mileage, and that’s exactly the area where the team would be hoping to rack up the miles and gain an understanding of the car.

Alpine F1

“More of the same” almost seems succinct when we talk about Alpine’s F1 pre-season test objective in Bahrain, but in fairness, that is exactly what is needed at this point.

The French team kicked things off quite impressively, and now it’s all about building on it.

Cadillac

Cadillac’s F1 pre-season test objective has to be to just learn as much as it can. There are a lot of growing pains that one can attach to the American team, and if it is just able to execute things well for the next three days, it would be considered a win.
